Identity theft has become one of the major law enforcement challenges of the new economy, as vast quantities of personal information are now vulnerable to criminal misuse. The number of identity fraud victims has jumped to over 13.1 million according to recent studies.

Identity fraud occurs when someone's personal information is used to access money, while identity theft is when personal information is accessed even if it isn't used for financial gain. Data breaches were one of the main sources of fraud last year, with one in three people who received notifications of a data breach discovering their identities were used for fraudulent means.

Secure your Identity Week is all about increasing public awareness of the risk of identity theft and the need for shredding sensitive and confidential documents as a means of preserving the privacy of personal information. The best way to discard documents containing confidential information is to shred the documents.

Starting Monday, October 19, 2015 and running through Friday, October 23, 2015, MinnKota will dedicate five days of FREE SHREDDING for individuals in the Red River Valley area. This will provide an opportunity for individuals to bring up to 5 boxes of their confidential documents, outdated tax statements and other personal documents to MinnKota and have it shredded for free.

Minnkota Secured Document Destruction, a NAID AAA certified document destruction company in Fargo, North Dakota, will provide free shredding at their facility located at 809 4th Avenue North, Fargo, North Dakota. All documents will be fed into a high-speed shredder. This will successfully destroy documents containing confidential or sensitive information in a way that makes documents indecipherable. The paper is then recycled into other paper products.

Protect yourself against identify theft by always destroying discarded documents that contain personal information and account numbers. The following listing specifies documents that should be shredded to reduce or minimize the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft: anything with your social security number on it, obsolete financial records, pre-approved credit card applications, personal medical records, correspondence and tax preparation worksheets, receipts, credit card statements, telephone bills, canceled checks and bank statements, mail and old records, insurance forms, physician statements, expired charge cards, and mailing labels from magazines.

Take the time to secure your identity the week of October 19th through October 23rd, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free shredding is for individuals only. For businesses standard fees will apply.
